I think on its terms, the film works very well. But in my heart, what I wanted to be was a novelist. thesis on Ernest Hemingway and was starting my doctoral dissertation on John Earth. Specializing in American literature, I'd finished my M.A. "All that said, you know, movies and novels are different train tracks. David Morrell - Rambo 1 - First Blood Introduction In the summer of 1968, I was 25, a graduate student at Penn State University. 2 hours ago &0183 &32 EvenFirst Blood author David Morrell was a fan, calling Rambo the first time that the tone of my novel First Blood has been used in any of the movies. there isn't really a lot for him to work with. If it weren't for Brian Dennehy's brilliance. "Clearly, in the movie First Blood, Rambo was emphasised, and the police chief is kind of reduced. The point of my novel was that were these polar opposites, and they had equal time, equal pages in the book. "They also minimalised the police chief's character. "The ending is very different," Morrell said. In the book, Rambo dies, and while the movie did shoot an ending that saw the character killed, his fate was changed in reshoots. The film of First Blood made significant alterations to Morrell's original story of a Vietnam War veteran embarking on a rampage after being hassled by local police, most notably the ending. I’ll post my full review here when it goes live on my blog.ĭinosaurs Before Dark (Magic Tree House Series #1) by Mary Pope Osborne,Ī good transition into chapter books for the new reader. I can see why kids love them but I don’t know how much of these I would be able to handle has an adult haha. I may read a few more but I won’t read the entire series. It’s a children’s chapter book and had some really interesting dynamics. I'm excited to continue on with the books as well as the graphic novels. There isn't necessarily much that happens, but the formatting, beautiful illustrations, and high energy of the story will definitely appeal to younger readers. The story itself follows Jack and Annie as they find a treehouse that magically allows them to travel places. If there is one animal that attracts younger readers, it's dinosaurs. As the series opener, Mary Pope Osborne did an excellent job in choosing dinosaurs. I have no idea why I never continued on with the series, but I figured there's no better time than the present to go ahead and try to work my way through it now. But I quickly found, both from class and from this book, that the definition of “subliminal art” that had been beaten into me during k – 12 education is not what he meant. The word “subliminal” reminded me of literary analyses of why curtains were blue or film analyses of how that particular rock represented fertility. Speck first said that architecture’s effects were mainly subliminal. I was extremely skeptical in class when Dr. Intellect: Positives “Subliminal” Architecture Rasmussen’s book is meant to explain architecture to the average person–or rather, explain to a person how architecture isn’t what they think it is. The first is Experiencing Architecture by Steen Eiler Rasmussen.Ĥ STARS Overall: 8/10 Entertainment: 3/5 Intellect: 4/5 Now, you yourself may not be able to take the class, but you can take a look at the three books we’re reading. Larry Speck, has a reputation for causing students to switch their major to architecture. So far, I can certainly agree that the class has been important to my intellectual development, so to speak, and has opened my eyes to several interesting topics. This semester, I’m taking a course called Architecture and Society (ARC 308). Daniels is also a contributor to The Mary Sue. Appearing just a few months after the first Earth Day and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, it is beloved not just for Seuss’ signature wordplay but also for bringing the ecology movement to children.Īlthough the Lorax is the title character, Greig was drawn to the book’s villain. Seuss’ book has been a favorite since its publication in 1971. “The brilliant thing about these books is they leave you lots of space,” says Greig, accentuating the positive. “Turning that into a full-length piece is daunting.” “I remember reading ‘Corduroy’ to my own children many times and I’ve clocked it at five minutes,” says Barry Kornhauser, who wrote the play for CTC. In fact, both shows now playing there, “Corduroy,” which runs through May 20, and “The Lorax,” currently in previews and opening this weekend, are in that tricky-to-adapt vein. Of course it’s possible to make a treasured tale such as “Ramona the Pest” into a play, or “Akeelah and the Bee.” But picture books like “Harold and the Purple Crayon” or “The Snowy Day” - which, not to put too fine a point on it, have no characters or plots - make for bigger challenges. Playwright David Greig had two reactions when he was asked to adapt Dr. He spends his entire life following Joshua around and trying to make sure that he stays out of trouble. He was a horny, cheerful smartass who could teach dogs a thing or two about loyalty. I loved Biff! I wanted to reach into the pages and smack him upside the head a few times, but usually when that happened another character stepped in and smacked him for me. That’s the best I can do as far as the is-it-offensive-to-Christians thing. But he does have fun, love, and learn from people from many countries and religions. If it had been, I would have had to put the book down. Joshua is still absolutely the Son of God, without sin, sent to save mankind from our sins. But I do have lines that I don’t want to have crossed, and Moore could cross them easily.” I was okay with what he wrote here. But there might be a few people out there like me, who are thinking, “I’m pretty open-minded. I think if you’re going to be offended by this book, the title will turn you off right away. I know what I’m thinking but I’m having trouble finding the right words. Christopher Moore has fun imagining what exactly Jesus–or Joshua, as Moore chooses to use the Hebrew name–might have gotten up to in the in-between years. Oh, there’s the one story about him teaching in the temple when he was 12, but other than that, he was born and then he started his ministry around the age of 30. There are roughly 30 years of Jesus’s life that are unaccounted for.
